The algorithms that analyse seismic data, identifying potential oil fields, are the same ones used in auto-tune software. In a world of collapsing environments, the tender act of singing necessarily turns the chaos of geo-politics onto the body. The vocal tract becomes an oil field, becomes a subjective bodily presence, becomes a contested, apocalyptic site.

wound_carry_(reach_for_the_stars), the first full length album by Ex-Rental, sees the project retain its introverted, broken pop façade, but speaks (sings) much more broadly in its scope. Dealing with the intermingling of identity, the internet, technology, and redundant-bodies this album sees De Lacy expand his sound considerably.

Bouncing synth lines, intricate yet heady 909 drums and icy guitars give the tracks their frantic, high-octane atmosphere. Featuring dance remixes by endworld1000000000, MLDVR and My Dad Is Car, Ex-Rental is consciously, but not without dissonance, club-ready.

Simpsons jokes, meme references and lyrics lifted from lad rap and gabber veil the emotional intensity of the album.

Overwhelming vocal effects dissipate De Lacy’s body, Ex-Rental becomes a process of allowing genuine emotion to exist uncompromised in turbo, ironic, not-quite-dance music. Denying a clear bodied presence this album presents pop stardom for the world of synthetic biology, lab-grown-meat, chemical-resistant-cockroaches and cyborgs.

wound_carry_(reach_for_the_stars) is about the future and about extending urself beyond ur body. I hope at least it guides me safely.
